Sunsari, Oct 31: Chief of Koshi Province, Parshuram Khapung, has stressed the need to preserve and promote the Limbu language, literature and culture to protect the identity of the Limbu community. 
While launching ' Ikkisum Ikla', a collection of Palam (traditional songs of Limbu community) by Subarna Nembang in Dharan on Saturday, the Province Chief said the Limbu community has a rich history and a distinct cultural identity.  He urged the community to be proactive in preserving its heritage. 
"Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural nation. Therefore, it is essential to preserve the languages, literature, and cultures of all ethnic groups," he said, adding that the Limbu language, literature, and culture constitute an integral part of Nepal’s diverse heritage. He also stressed the need for objective study, research, and assessment for the prosperity of such heritage. 
Province Chief Khapung further highlighted the role of families in preserving the mother tongue, describing the family as a child's first school. 
He said parents and family members have the primary responsibility to teach their children their mother tongue. Creating an environment at home where children regularly speak and learn the language, he added, would make a significant contribution to its preservation.
